Midlands science received an award from the Naughton foundation on Saturday October 5.
The Naughton Foundation was established by Martin and Carmel Naughton in 1994.
The Naughton scholarship was created by The Naughton Foundation in 2008 to promote the study of engineering, science and technology at third level in Ireland.
Each year a number of exceptional students are awarded scholarships to study at undergraduate level at any publicly funded university or third-level institution in Ireland.
At least one student from each county receives a scholarship.
This years Laois winner is Ruth Helen Bergin who is a student at Heywood Community School.
She has won a scholarship for Data Science & Analytics at University College Cork.
Dr Craig Slattery, Chairperson of Midlands Science commented “support from The Naughton Foundation will assist Midlands Science in the delivery of a number of outreach activities in the midlands and we look forward to working with them.”
“We are grateful to them for their strong interest in science, technology, engineering and maths education in the midlands region and their appreciation of our efforts to grow science capital through long term outreach and public engagement.”
Midlands Science undertakes a range of outreach activities throughout the year in the midlands promoting science, technology, engineering and maths through school workshops, public events and a regional science festival.
It is supported by Science Foundation Ireland, The Ireland Funds, The Social Innovation Fund of Ireland and a range of project partners.
It is managed by a voluntary board of trustees which includes representatives from industry, education and research.
With support from the Naughton Foundation they hope to encourage more young people to get interested in and take careers in the Stem Subjects.
