Talk about an event!
There was an incredible crowd in the small picturesque village of Vicarstown on Saturday evening as over 1200 people danced on the banks of the Grand Canal as part of a World Record attempt organised by the Laois Sports Partnership as part of European Week of Sport.
The brilliant local group from the Buggy School of Dance led the way while there was an amount of activities and the rain held off for long enough to make it all possible.
The community of Vicarstown danced their way into the Guinness Book of Records back in 2000 when they did a Riverdance on the banks of the canal and they replicated that on Saturday.
True to all local events, there was also an underage football blitz, arguably the most impressive selection of bouncing castles you could ever hope to see and entertainment and refreshments in the local community hall.
European Week of Sport aims to promote sport and physical activity across Europe. The week is for everyone, regardless of age, background or fitness level.
With a focus on grassroots initiatives, the aim is to inspire Europeans to #BeActive on a regular basis and create opportunities in peoples’ everyday lives to exercise more.
Being Active doesn’t mean having to be part of a sports club, a gym, running marathons or cycling across Europe.
Being Active can be running around playing with your children, grabbing a walk with work colleagues on your lunch break, going outside and exploring the great outdoors – whatever gets you moving to lead a healthier and more active lifestyle.
Our photographer Julie Anne Miller was in Vicarstown on Saturday evening where she captured a selection of great images.
