Laois County Council is continuing with its carrot and stick approach to illegal dumping and waste management – and so far this year it has received 578 complaints concerning illegal dumping.
86 notices of litter fines have been issued and legal proceedings initiated on 15 cases and there have been a further three convictions.
A total of 48 notices have been issued this year in relation to abandoned cars.
The total tonnage of refuse collected from illegal dumping up to the end of June, including the Clean-Up Laois Week is 190.40 tonnes.
There are plans underway to revisit the success of the spring clean with an Autumn Litter Blitz.
The Green Space Enforcement Race is also underway whereby the local authority target areas of illegal dumping in open spaces near housing estates.
They are also vigorously tracking waste disposal by households in an effort at curbing unauthorised waste contractors.
On the positive side of the equation the quantities of bottles and cans recycled via the Laois bottle banks continues to make a valuable contribution to the environment with a further 88.51 tonnes recycled in July, bringing the total for the year to date to 758.41 tonnes.
January was the busiest month measuring 141.2 tonnes.
