It’s another busy weekend in Laois with so much on for everyone in the family.

The Laois Walks Festival continues with guided walks in Gattabawn, Monicknew and Capponellan.

Laois Libraries continue their summer programmed of events with lots to do for children of all ages.

The Folly Festival will kick off on Friday 19th, two days of music, comedy and culture.

Emo hosts a wonderful traditional music evening with Triona Marshall and Dušica Mladenović from Serbia, another free event but ticketed.

THURSDAY JULY 18

Kite Crafts – Mountrath Library

“Let’s go fly a kite”. Make a pop-up kite card. It’s a lovely way to spend an hour with little ones and all the materials are supplied. 12pm – 12:30pm (3-6 years) 2:30pm – 3:30pm (7-12 years) and the event is free but booking is essential.  Call the library on 057 8756378 to book.

Pirate Treasure Hunt – Mountmellick Library

Pirate treasure hunt, this fun session with awaken the imagination in children and adults alike.  Its suitable for all ages a free event but booking is essential. It begins at 10:30am-12:30pm and to book call the library on 057 86 44572. 

The Incredibles – Kids’ Film Club Portlaoise Library

Portlaoise Library’s five-week season of Super Summer Movies begins this Thursday at 5 pm with Disney Pixar’s ‘The Incredibles’. Popcorn and drinks will be served at this free event! Parents are requested to stay with children during the film. The event is free but booking is essential. Pirate Treasure Hunt – Stradbally Library

Pirate treasure hunt, this fun session with awaken the imagination in children and adults alike.  Its suitable for all ages a free event but booking is essential. Ages 3 – 12 years. It begins at 3pm and to book call the library on 057 86 41673. 

Gattabawn – Laois Walks Festival 2019

Day 16 of the Laois Walks Festival at Gattabawn, Durrow.  Stroll along the Gattabawn Loop which uses old farmlanes, open countryside and forest paths.  This is a Grade A 10km walks and takes about 3 hours. Meet at Mackeys Pub. The cost per walk is €3 and a festival ticket for all walks is just €30. FRIDAY JULY 19

Portlaoise Summer Festival 

Due to popular demand the Portlaoise Summer Festival has been extended!  The Summer Market Festival will now take place every Friday from the 12th of July to the 20th of September 2019. It will be trading from 8.30am to 3.00pm in Peppers Lane off Lyster Square. 

Fantastic Mr. Fox – Kids’ Summer Movie Club -Abbeyleix Library

Every Friday in July Abbeyleix Library are hosting a movie afternoon complete with popcorn and drinks. This week 19th July the film is Fantastic Mr. Fox.  It’s suitable for ages 7+ and its free to attend. The movie begins at 2:30pm. Lego Fun – Mountrath Library

Every Friday Mountrath Library is hosting Lego fun for all budding builders.  Build your own Lego creations Suitable for ages 8-12 years and is a free event but booking is essential. To find out more call 057 8756378.

Ground Out – Emo Court and Parklands
“Ground Out” is a new work by Ian Wilson, one of Ireland’s most acclaimed composers. Written for violin, Irish harp and soundtrack, “Ground Out” is the result of a nine-month project examining the effects of climate change on how we produce and consume our food.

Featuring two wonderful musicians, violinist Dušica Mladenović from Serbia and The Chieftains’ member and Laois’ own Tríona Marshall on Irish harp, the hour-long programme will also include classical and traditional music from Serbia and Ireland.

The Folly Festival, 19th and 20th Cullohill Castle 

Ireland’s First Gender Balanced Music Festival takes place at Cullohill Castle, Co. Laois on July 19th & 20th. A fantastic line up of Hermitage Green, Wyvern Lingo, The 2 Johnnies, & many more amazing Irish acts, all take to the stage over the two nights!

The Daytime Events on Saturday 20th July, are open for everyone to attend, whether you have a ticket or not! The Folly really is a fun filled, family friendly festival, which has something for all ages!

Among the activities are a guided walk up Cullohill Mountain, Adventure Race, Artisan Food & Drink Market, Dog Show, The Great Folly Bake, Magician Brian Daly, in our very special Kid’s Play Area at Nancy’s Yard, and lots, lots more! Special guests on the day include comedian and TV star, Bernard O’Shea, and former Munster and Ireland rugby legend, Alan Quinlan!

Laois Hospice Vintage Run Launch – The Gandon Inn

To launch the Laois Hospice Vintage Run, The Gandon Inn will host an evening event at 8pm. Laois Vintage club in 23 years have raised €935,000, at this launch they will explain their plans for this year and how they hope to get to the million. SATURDAY JULY 20

Monicknew Mountain Walk, Mountrath – Laois Walks Festival 2019

Day 16 of the Laois Walks Festival is at the beautiful Monicknew.  Experience the natural views and the pure beauty of the Slieve Bloom mountains as you ramble along its woodland’s paths. This is a Grade B 10km walks and takes about 3 hours. Meeting at Recreational Carpark, Grid N307015 at 2:30pm

Raheen Vintage Show and Working Day

This is a great family day out to see what your community has to offer.  Raheen Vintage Club Vintage Show & Working day is celebrating 10 years of Raheen Vintage Club. Proceeds In Aid of Embrace Fam, MS Ireland Laois Branch and Raheen Cemetery Committee. A great family day out Vintage Car & Tractor Display, Silage and Threshing Display, Auto Jumble, Auction of Farm Goods , Entertainment From Rock on Paddy, Dog Show and much more. Capponellan Woods Durrow – Laois Walks Festival 2019

Day 18 of the Laois Walks Festival takes us to Capponellan Woods. Woodland walk through part of Castle Durrow estate once owned by lord Ashbrooke. This is a Grade B 12km walk and takes 3 hours.  The meeting point is Capponnellan Carpark at 2:30pm Grid Ref S386764. The cost per walk is €3 and a festival ticket for all walks is just €30. Slieve Bloom Guided Walk 

The Slieve Bloom Walking Club’s next guided walk is the Clear Lake walk.  This walk is a Grade B, 7km walk and takes 3 hours. Meeting point is Cadamstown Carpark at 11am.  €5 per walk or €20 annual membership (€30 for family). For more information see www.slievebloom.ie.
