Scholarships to secondary school may be relatively unheard of in Laois, but Portlaoise College are changing that.
They have offered a scholarship or bursary worth €1,000 each to two lucky students, which covers the cost of their school uniform, books and school tablet.
Students who sit the entrance exam are then invited to sit a separate exam for a scholarship programme.
This year the incoming first year scholarship winners were Oisin Fitzpatrick and Amy Kennedy.
Oisin attends Scoil Naomh Eoin, Killenard, while Amy is in sixth class in Cosby NS, Stradbally.
The scholarship programme was introduced to reward excellence and high academic standards.
Both Oisin and Amy are pictured below outside of Portlaoise College.
