Claire Romito, 1st class teacher and Green School’s Coordinator for Portlaoise Educate Together NS, co-hosted an informative assembly last week along with members from Portlaoise Tidy Towns.
The initiative was to educate staff, parents and students about litter and waste and the importance of ‘Clean Up Laois Week’.
Portlaoise Tidy Towns had contacted Claire to offer their support with the School’s Green School Programme.
Clean Up Laois Week was in full swing last week and the Tidy Town’s Committee members and volunteers offered to do a litter pick with students, parents and staff from the school.
The clean up was a huge success with seven large bags of litter collected from the school grounds.
Portlaoise Tidy Towns also funded a biodiversity workshop for eight classes in the Educate Together school with local bee-keeper, Edel Heeran.
They are also funding a field trip to Abbeyleix bog in May for both first class students, where an expert on bogs will facilitate a hands-on day of learning with the children.
Portlaoise Educate Together boasts a hands-on approach to environmental issues, with the school recently reducing energy usage to try gain their second green flag.
Claire Romito has been at the forefront of environmental issues within the school along side a Green School’s committee made up of students from 1st to 6th class that meet once a month to work on issues that they can implement within the school curriculum.
