The former Lady President and Captain of Mountrath Golf Club was remembered fondly as she was laid to rest in St Fintan’s Cemetery, Mountrath today.
Monica Phelan (née O’Brien) of the Pike of Rushall was described as ‘always very welcoming and friendly’ by those who knew her in Mountrath Golf Club.
Speaking collectively, members of Mountrath Golf Club told LaoisToday:
“Monica was a member of Mountrath Golf Club for many year, serving on many ladies committees and as Lady President and Captain.
“She was always very welcoming and encouraging to new members and shared her golf wisdom.
“She was a loyal club member, and above all she was always great for a joke and a laugh,” they said.
Monica, who was described as a kind and caring woman, passed away peacefully on Monday April 15, 2019, surrounded by her loving family in the kind and dedicated care of the staff of the Midlands Regional Hospital Portlaoise.
Castletown GAA club also paid their respects.

Monica is predeceased by her daughter Fiona, beloved wife of Michael and loving mother to Declan, Neil, Ronan, Clodagh and Ciara, sadly missed by her husband , children, daughters-in-law, sons-in-law, grandchildren, brothers, sisters, relatives, neighbours and friends.
Requiem Mass took place at 1 o’clock, followed by burial in St Fintan’s Cemetery, Mountrath.
