A driver caught doing 174 km/h on the motorway outside Portlaoise today was found to have a large volume of cocaine with him in the care.
“The driver was found in possession of €2000 worth of cocaine,” said a Garda statement on the discovery.
Going over 50 km/h faster than the speed limit, the driver was issued a fixed charge notice for speeding with a court appearance to follow.
Elsewhere this evening, emergency services have been tackling a fire in a building beside Portarlington Train Station, which has delayed hundreds of local commuters.
Emergency services including ambulances, three fire brigades and Gardaí are now at the scene at Station Road in the town.
It comes during peak-time for commuters. Delays of up to 50 minutes to services out of Heuston can be expected as a result with trains not stopping at Portarlington station.
Bus transfers will operate from Portlaoise to Portarlington.
