You know its spring when you see lots of runs and walks being organised and it’s a great excuse to get out and about this weekend.

The Kinnitty Knight Run takes place Friday night and is a run with a difference.  Running through the beautiful Slieve Blooms by moonlight is just magical.  

St Michael’s AC are also holding a charity run in Killenard Sunday morning and of course the Slieve Bloom Walking Club have another walk through the beautiful Slieve Blooms on Sunday.

Johnny Cash is in town on Saturday and there’s live music and table quizzes aplenty to keep you entertained in the evenings. There’s something for everyone.

THURSDAY FEBRUARY 28

Herons – views past and present

Amanda Pedlow (Heritage Officer – Offaly CoCo) is taking the lead on the latest of the biodiversity talks by the Irish Wildlife Trust Laois/Offaly Branch.  

Amanda is passionate about Herons and will read excerpts of literature followed by a discussion on heronry’s and their locations.

So pop along to Mueller & O’Connell Bakery in Abbeyleix to be part of the discussion and to learn more about this fascinating bird.  Talk begins at 8pm and there is no cover charge.

FRIDAY MARCH 1

Tech Talks Launch Party

TechTalks is the new brand bringing you the best of techno/house/funk to Portlaoise. As well as promoting the techno scene in Ireland, they plan on bringing the best of local and international acts to the midlands.

Find them in Kavanagh’s Bar & Venue from 9pm and tickets are €10. 

Kinnitty Knight Run

Love running but also love going out on Friday night? Well the Kinnitty Castle 10km Knight Run Challenge is a perfect marriage.  

This 10km trail run will start at the famous 4* Kinnitty Castle Hotel before ascending under a waning crescent moon through the glorious Slieve Bloom Mountains.

Get the Friday feeling going with a DJ at the start & finish line. All competitors will wear head torches and there will be mobile flood lights on the mountain with a fully way marker route back to Kinnitty Castle. Light refreshments at the end of race.

Table Quiz

We love our table quizzes in Laois so why not come out and support Maryborough FC this Friday and test your general knowledge at the same time. Expect a few sports rounds!

A table of four is €40 and all are welcome with some great spot prizes on the night. Quiz begins at 9pm upstairs in Kavanagh’s Bar & Venue.

SATURDAY MARCH 2

Pink Gin – Live Music

Pink Gin are a dynamic five piece function band who put a twist on the modern and the classics. All in all making for a great night’s entertainment. Catch them in Kavanagh’s Bar & Venue from 10pm and there is no cover charge.

The Man in Black – Johnny Cash Tribute

He sings like Johnny, he looks like Johnny and he performs just like the great man, with energy, charisma and vitality! This is not to be missed by all Johnny Cash fans as Terry Lee Goffee and his band celebrate the music and power of The Man in Black.  

Limited tickets are still available and cost €22/€20. The show begins at 8pm in Dunamaise Arts Centre. 

Ballyfin GAA Table Quiz

Another opportunity this weekend to test your general knowledge at the Ballyfin GAA Table Quiz. Support your local club and have a great night out in The Deadman’s Inn.

A table of four is €40 and kicks off from 9pm-11.30pm.

SUNDAY MARCH 3  

Slieve Bloom Guided Walk

The Slieve Bloom Walking Club’s next guided walk is Glenafelly/Cumber Hill Walk.  This walk is a Grade A 10km walk and takes 4 hours so a good level of fitness is required.  

Meeting point is at Kinnitty Community Centre at 11am. €5 per walk or €20 annual membership (€30 for family). For more information see here

The Heritage 5k

For a great way to start a Sunday why not join St Michael’s AC in their 5K charity run in aid of BRAVEHEARTS social inclusion hub, Portarlington.

The race begins from The Heritage Killenard with registration from 9.30am and race entry is €10.  Refreshments will be served afterwards, compliments of the hotel.

Grapple Kings 3 – Brazilian Jiu Jitsu

Grapple Kings 3 returns with their biggest event to date: Ireland v Poland. Ireland coach Kieran Davern and Team Poland coach Mariusz Domasat will choose their teams and then battle it out in the main event for the GK nation’s belt.

The event begins at 5pm in Dunamaise Arts Centre and tickets are €40/€30. Don’t miss the biggest Brazilian Jiu Jitsu event of the year.

James O’Connor – Live Music

James O’Connor returns to Kavanagh’s Bar & Venue (Bar) to round off the weekend with some great live music.  The gig begins at 7pm and there is no cover charge.
