A local landowner has made 10 acres of land available to purchase near one of Laois leading tourist attractions in the Slieve Bloom mountains.

The news emerged at this morning’s meeting of the Borris-in-Ossory Mountmellick municipal district where Cllr Paddy Bracken tabled a motion calling on the Council to improve the car park facilities at Glenbarrow, Rosenallis.

He said that during the mild weather over Christmas, Glenbarrow was alive with people from all over the county and it is extremely well used.

Cllr Seamus McDonald seconded the motion. He said that a landowner is selling 10 acres of land.

He said: “This comes up at the Slieve Bloom Association every month. I am chairperson. Mick Dunne has 10 acres for sale, I ask Laois County Council to consider it.

“Hundreds of people visit here every week, we need toilet facilities also.”

Cllr Bracken also spoke about the economic benefits that investment in this area would bring.

Engineer Stan Cullen said the full 10 acres wouldn’t be required but the Council will engage with the landowner.

Cllr John King was of the opinion that the full 10 acres should be purchased so that if they wished to further develop it in the future – they could.
