It was the story that dominated the early part of 2018 – the people of Ireland being asked to vote to legislate abortion in this country by repealing the 8th Amendment.
Throughout our coverage we allowed both sides of the campaign to air their views on LaoisToday.
Our columnist Fr Paddy Byrne urged a No Vote on a couple of occasions in his weekly piece – while on the Yes side, two young Laois women – Gearoidin McEvoy and Dr Naomi Elster – argued why it should be repealed.
Throughout our coverage we looked back on previous referendums in Ireland – like the 1983 Right to Life vote – and we also canvassed the national politicians that represent Laois people for their views.
In the end, Laois voted overwhemingly Yes – and interestingly the vote nationally was remarkably similar to our social media poll of followers a couple days people cast their vote.
As part of our Christmas Video Interview Series, we had Gearoidin McEvoy, who is from Timahoe, in for a chat.
In a sometimes emotional interview, she explains her background to getting involved, what it was like campaigning and why getting politics isn’t for her.
You can watch the interview in full right here.
The LaoisToday Christmas Video Interview series is being broadcast on the LaoisToday website and on our Facebook and YouTube accounts at 8pm every evening over Christmas. The next episode will air tomorrow evening.
