This was simply incredible.
In August of this year, three Laois students achieved top marks in the Leaving Cert.
Christopher Carew, Katy White and Luan Fletcher Calt all obtained 625 points in their Leaving Cert results.
Since then, each of these three students have gone on to do exceptional things.
Christopher went to UCD to study medicine and received an Entrance Scholar award in recognition of his academic accomplishments to date from the college.
Katy White received the best Leaving Cert biology results in the country and earned a Gold Medal for her achievements from the National Biology Society.
Luan Fletcher-Calt earned the prestigious €20,000 Naughton Scholarship.
This goes to exceptional students who would like to study in the STEM field (science, technology, engineering and maths) at University.
Luan is currently in Trinity College where he is studying Maths.
A remarkable three Laois students have received top marks in their Leaving Cert results, which were released today.
Christopher Carew, Katy White and Luan Fletcher Calt all obtained 625 points in their respective Leaving Cert results today.
All three are Portlaoise residents, with Christopher and Katy attending the same school, Mountrath CS, while Luan attended St Mary’s CBS Portlaoise.
Where will these bright minds go?
Christopher hopes to do medicine in UCD, while Katy hopes to also do medicine in Trinity College and Luan will join her as he plans to study mathematics in Trinity College.
Speaking to LaoisToday, Katy said: “I was so delighted I couldn’t believe it.
“I was happy with the mocks but I thought the actual Leaving Cert was harder, I went out of a few exams and was convinced I had messed up!”
After studying Biology, Chemistry and Physics, medicine felt like a natural choice for science-loving Katy, with her and classmate Christopher receiving their HPAT results in June.
Luan has another wait too, this time to see if his application for a €20,000 Naughton Scholarship is successful, awarded to top achieving students going on to study STEM subjects.
A total of 910 students received the Leaving Cert results all over Laois today.
