Huge numbers of then primary school pupils turned out to the Ratheniska table quiz from schools throughout the county on November 14, 2005.
Among these included Ballyfin NS, Scoil Mhuire NS Portlaoise and Ratheniska NS itself.
Stories that dominated the headlines that week 13 years ago were a lack of funding for Hospice care in the county.
Dr Peter Naughton spoke out against the lack of funding. “In this economic climate, I think it is very unreasonable to expect the people of Laois to voluntarily contribute for a service that is embraced nationwide.
“At this stage all counties now have a home care service,” reported by Grace Halford for the Leinster Express.
There was also a bomb scare reported on Main Street at the time, as Gardaí evacuated the Courthouse following a phonecall warning of a bomb on the premises.
There was also a renewed appeal for funding for Christmas lights in Portlaoise for the holidays.
