For the 45th consecutive year, the Portlaoise Singers will perform a night of singing and storytelling for their Christmas show.
On Sunday December 9, they will take to the stage at the Midlands Park Hotel for what promises to be another memorable night.
There are roughly 65 members of the Portlaoise Singers and they come from all over the county.
The group will perform classics like Nessun Dorma as well as a range of folks songs from around the world.
The second half of the show will consist of traditional carols and it will end with a rendition of Holy Night.
Joining them on the night for some avid storyelling and poetry is Portlaoise man Pat Boran.
His humorous memoir ‘The Invisible Prison: Scenes from an Irish Childhood’, was published in 2009 and recently reissued.
In all he has published more than a dozen books of poetry and prose, the most recent of which are Waveforms: Bull Island Haiku (2016) with photographs by the author, and A Man Is Only As Good (2017), a pocket-sized new and selected poems.
Editions of his poetry have appeared in many languages. His non-fiction includes the popular writers’ handbook The Portable Creative Writing Workshop (revised and updated, 2013) and A Short History of Dublin (2000).
He is a former editor of Poetry Ireland Review and was for many years presenter of The Poetry Programme and The Enchanted Way on RTÉ Radio 1.
Awards for his poetry include The Patrick Kavanagh Award in 1989 and the US-based Lawrence O’Shaughnessy Award in the US in 2008. He is a member of Aosdána, Ireland’s affiliation of creative artists.
Doors open in the Midlands Park Hotel at 7.30pm with the show kicking off at 8pm.
Tickets, priced at €15, are on sale from the Dunamaise Theatre and also are available at the door on the night.
