Comedy is big again this weekend with three different offerings to suit all tastes.  

Pat Shortt is in Abbeyleix on Saturday with his hit show Hey. Irish comedian of the year Steve Bennett brings his show to Kavanaghs Comedy Club and the Laois Open Door Theatre group continue their run in Abbeyleix on Thursday.  

As we’ve come to expect there’s lots of live music around the county, plus fundraisers and craft fairs to help get some Christmas shopping done. It’s another busy weekend in Laois.

THURSDAY NOVEMBER 15

65 Kitchen Choir

Back due to phenomenal demand! The 65 Kitchen Choir returns to the Dunamaise stage with a fantastic line-up of music and song.

This year, the choir, has put together a completely new show. The 65 Kitchen Choir always guarantees a great evening. Tickets costs €16 and the show runs at 8pm of Thursday, Friday and Saturday night. There’s very few tickets left so don’t miss out. To book see here or call 057 8663355.

Old Portlaoise: 40 pictures, 40 stories

Laois Heritage Society is hosting a lovely evening to discuss the stories behind 40 pictures of Laois in bygone days.  

Come join local historian John Dunne for a fascinating look into the stories of the past. This is a lovely way to learn more about Laois through the ages.

The event will be held in the Midlands Park Hotel at 8pm and entry is just €3 and Laois Heritage Society members are free.

Theatre Night – Laois Open Door Theatre

Laois Open Door Theatre presents a night of comedy with two one act plays, “Anybody for Tea?” and Roman Affairs”. The two comedy acts guarantee a night of laughter and entertainment.

The play with be followed with music and song so it’s a great night out.  The next show is in the Abbeyleix Manor Hotel on Thursday 15 at 8pm. Tickets cost €10 and can be purchased on the door. The show begins at 8pm.  

FRIDAY NOVEMBER 16

Ballyfin Table Quiz & Social Evening

Ballyfin National School is holding a table quiz and social evening on Friday night in The Deadman’s Inn.   

All funds raised go to the children of Ballyfin National School. Lots of prizes to be won and there will also be a raffle on the night. The quiz kicks off at 8.30pm and to find out more see here

Steve Bennett Everything is F*caked!

Fancy a bit of comedy to kick off your Friday night? Well join Steven Bennett on a magical journey through the scariest bits of modern living, find ways to cope with it all through songs, poems, and razor-sharp stand-up from one of Ireland’s finest comedic talents.  

Gig kicks off at 9.30pm in Kavanaghs Comedy Club and tickets cost € 12. To book see here

Pat Shortt – ‘Hey’

Pat Shortt performs his hilarious new live show ‘Hey’ in the Abbeyleix Manor Hotel.  

‘Hey!’ Delivers a peculiar take on modern life that only the unique mind of Pat Shortt could create.  This is a great chance to see one of Ireland’s best loved comedians right here in Laois.

Tickets are €28 and show begins at 8pm. Tickets are on sale here or at the hotel reception.

Thin Az Lizzy

Thin Az Lizzy return to Kavanaghs Bar & Venue this Friday night.  This Thin Lizzy tribute act are as close as anyone to capturing the band’s sound and a must for all Thin Lizzy fans. Tickets are € 12 and doors open at 9.30pm.  

Bridge Night

St Conleths LGFC is holding a bridge night as a club fundraiser in O’Dempsey’s Clubhouse Killenard.  Entry costs €10 and included supper. There are also lots of prizes to be won on the night.

SATURDAY NOVEMBER 17

Ballyfin Cabaret

The Deadman’s Inn hosts the annual Ballyfin Cabaret Night this Friday. A great night is planned with music, refreshments and presentation of monies to local charities.

Gerry Quigley & the Durty Blues

Manhattan Mixer is the place to be for all night owls who want to hear some live music.  Kicking off at midnight, Gerry Quigley and the Durty Blues put on a great show.

This band is an original with progressive Celtic rock, rock and blues, and some of your favourite 70’s rock classics!  There’s no cover charge and doors open at 12 midnight.

Rock and Roll Bingo

Sox’s Bar are having a bingo night but not as you know it! Calling begins at 8.30pm so come along and start getting your full house! For more information see here

Durrow Craft Fair

Come along to the annual craft fair in Durrow.  There will be lots of crafts and Christmas gift ideas in the Castle Arms Hotel. For more information call Mary on 087 2200199.

Mosaic Making for Adults

Aidan Byrne is running a Mosaic making workshop aimed at both beginners and people with previous experience in mosaic and other crafts. You will be thought to make your own personalised mosaics.

SUNDAY NOVEMBER 18

Slieve Bloom Guided Walk

The Slieve Bloom Walking Club’s next guided walk is Glenafelly.  This walk is a 9km Grade B walk and takes 3 -4 hours so suitable for good level of fitness.

Meeting point is Deadman’s Inn Ballyfin at 11am.  €5 per walk or €20 annual membership. For more information see here

Emo Art & Craft fair

Emo Art & Craft fair will be held this Sunday. There is now a large number of exhibitors and it’s a lovely way to pass the day.  The fair runs from 11.30 to 5pm.
