Gardai have launched a murder investigation after a father of three was fatally stabbed in Athy overnight.
A man in his early 30s received serious stab wounds and has been removed to Midlands Regional Hospital, Portlaoise where he died as a result of his injuries.
Gardaí have stated that a silver Audi belonging to the deceased was taken from the scene of the murder and found partially burned out on Woodstock Street in Athy.
It is understood the victim was from Nurney, a village about 12km from Athy.
Gardaí are appealing for witnesses to come forward and they say they are following several lines of inquiry. CCTV footage is also being examined as part of the investigation.
Gardaí had sealed off the area between the AIB bank and Gillens Jewellers on Duke Street.
The scene has been preserved and investigations are ongoing.
