The Mountrath to Abbeyleix road has been described as, “The worst road in the county’ according to one Laois councillor.
Cllr James Kelly made the statement at the latest Borris-in-Ossory/Mountmellick municipal district meeting.
“Even if your under the speed limit – you’d want to wear a helmet in the car!” said the Castletown cllr.
He wrote a motion to, “That the Council as a matter of urgency to ensure the safety of all road users, carry out comprehensive remedial roadworks on the R430 at Moonbawn, Abbeyleix, Rd, Mountrath.”
‘Subject to funding’
Acting senior engineer Stan Cullen said, “A tender for the repair of this section of road is underway and will be completed this year subject to funding.”
Cllr Kelly replied, “They’re three great words – subject to funding.”
Mr Cullen agreed with cllr Kelly that there is a 750 metre section of road that would need to be considered most in need for remedial works.
The motion was seconded by cllr Brendan Phelan.
