Laois has voted for Michael D Higgins to be the tenth President of the Republic of Ireland.
The current president received 13,754 votes out of 27,643 cast from Laois voters, far higher than any of his other rivals.
This is 49.75 percent of the poll.
Businessman Peter Casey came in second, with 8,419 votes – 30.45 percent of the vote.
Sean Gallagher placed third with 1,464 votes (6.67 percent) and Joan Freeman came fourth with 1,464 (5.29 percent).
Liadh Ní Ríada placed fifth with 1,443,votes (5.22 percent) and Gavin Duffy finished sixth with 718 (2.5 percent).
The total registered number of electorate voters in the Laois constituency is 64,139.
The Laois constituency takes in 5,341 voters from Monasterevin, Kildare.
No tally showed the incumbent president being topped in votes – but tallies from areas such as Mountmellick and Rathdowney showed Peter Casey gathering a large number of votes.
Spectacularly low voter turnout
Out of a possible 64,139 people eligible in the constituency – 27,921 voted. 278 of these were invalid or spoiled votes, leaving the valid votes at 27,642.
The voter turnout in Laois was 43.53 percent.
Turnout looks to be the lowest in a Presidential Election ever – around 46% nationally.
Last night, an RTE Rec C Exit Poll stated that the current president is set to receive 58% of the vote, far higher than any of his other rivals.
3,474 people were interviewed at over 100 polling stations around the country yesterday.
