Michael D Higgins will be elected as the tenth President of the Republic of Ireland according to an RTE Rec C Exit Poll.
The current president is set to receive 58% of the vote, far higher than any of his other rivals.
3,474 people were interviewed at over 100 polling stations around the country today.
Turnout looks to be the lowest in a Presidential Election ever – around 46%.
This has a margin of error between 3 and 4% and they are normally very accurate.
The poll also suggests that Peter Casey will finish as runner up – backing up the findings of a poll we ran on our channels this week.
He is polling at 21% in the Red C poll. Casey, the entrepreneur famous for his time on Dragons Den, made some controversial comments about the Travelling Community and our social welfare system.
Speaking on Independent.ie’s podcast, he claimed Travellers should not be recognised as an ethnic minority because they are “basically people camping in someone else’s land”.
Liadh Ni Riadh is set to come third on 7%, Sean Gallagher and Joan Freeman have polled at 6% while Gavin Duffy is bringing up the rear on 2%.
People were also asked how they voted on the Blasphemy Referendum with 71% saying they voted to get rid of it.
Counting will get underway tomorrow.
