More toilet talk in local municipal district meeting

The toilet talk in Portlaoise municipal district meeting continued as the most recent meeting on Wednesday, October 17.

The saga re-open public toilets in Portlaoise wages on as councillor Pauline Madigan asked for an update on the tender process.

Cllr Willie Aird supports the idea to have public toilets, saying: “You’d certainly have to be embarrassed as a Portlaoise person having to say, ‘Sorry we have no public toilets’.”

‘Can’t expect people to spend €100 when we can’t spend a penny’

Cllr Noel Tuohy added his say to the discussion. “When we talk of tourism – you can’t expect people to spend €100 when we can’t spend a penny.

“There are 25,000 people in this town and we’re behaving like a village.”

At last month’s meeting, Cllr Tuohy also stated: “Four tourists – two adults and two kids – were looking for public toilets and I had to send them to the pub. Having no public toilets in this day and age is totally unacceptable.”

Cllr Aird suggested that there be two separate contracts for the toilets. One to build them, and another to maintain them.

A meeting with the Director of Services, Donal Brennan, was then suggested by cllr Caroline Dwane Stanley.

In a written response, Mr Brennan said that one preliminary proposal has been submitted for the upgrade and reopening of the public toilets.
