A new motion for a new Garda Station in Portlaoise was raised at the latest Portlaoise Municipal District meeting today.
Councillor Catherine Fitzgerald raised the motion, saying: “I’ve been getting requests for a new Garda station since I became a councillor. The current building is old and not fit for purpose.
Cllr Noel Tuohy echoed her sentiments, saying: “The reception is unacceptable. Lads are doing their best behind the counter in a small, little room where everyone is able to listen to your business.”
Looking to move beside the Courthouse
“Now is the time for us to look for new Garda station beside the Courthouse,” added cllr Fitzpatrick.
She also called for the Garda station to be a regional station: “We have a site out there and everything.”
In response to cllr Fitzgerald’s motion Acting Officer Kim Kinsella said, “A letter will issue to the Department in this regard.”
