European Week of Sport takes place at the end of this month and a Laois community will host one of only five BeActive nights in the country on Saturday, September 29, from 7 to 10pm.
Laois Sports Partnership are hosting a family fun activity event in association with Rathdowney-Errill Community Hub, who will host the night, showcasing the wonderful facilities and incredible community spirit it has to offer.
The night will be action packed with fun free activities and sports for all the family with a number of high profile GAA stars in attendance. There will even be a chance to have your photo taken with the Liam McCarthy Cup, the Sam Maguire, Champions League and FA Cup. We have no doubt these will be popular with the “big kids” on the night too!
Caroline Myers, Co-ordinator of Laois Sports Partnership said;
“It’s fantastic for a community in Laois to be hosting a flagship event for European Week of Sport. We are one of only five counties who were awarded the funding from Sport Ireland. Its testament to the great work that is being done on the ground by clubs and communities all across the county.”
There will be activities on the night which cater for all age groups, such as Go-Game blitzes and games of rounders.
There will also be Yoga and bootcamp sessions, with some great activities planned from Clonmore tug of war.
Clover Utd will host the ‘Be- Active Bragging Rights Cup’ where their first team will compete for bragging rights of the club.
Climbing walls, obstacle courses, penalty shootout and inflatable challenges will also take place.
Kids and tots can try their hand at BORN TO MOVE a fun dance movement programme, and have a go on some balance bikes. Kids will be invited to “hit the diff’’ and bring down their Massey’s, New Holland and Zetors for a Toy Tractor run.
As well as visits from inter county hurlers on the night, there will be face painting, music, DJ’s and surprise special guests.
The European Week of Sport is for everyone, regardless of age, background or fitness level.
With a focus on grassroots initiatives, it will inspire Europeans to #BeActive on a regular basis and create opportunities in peoples’ everyday live
John Treacy, CEO of Sport Ireland said;
“The European Week of Sport in 2017 was a major success, with over 500 sport and physical events taking place throughout the country.
“Sport Ireland will continue to build on this platform going into this year’s event and highlight the many opportunities to integrate sport and physical activity into our daily lives – regardless of our age, fitness level or background.”
