Power outages and fallen trees in Laois due to Storm Ali

Trees

We were all worried about Helene but it is Ali we should have been more concerned by.

The first storm of the new season arrived last night and is still raging away this morning.

The people of Laois are reporting power outages across the county.

Residents in Ballinakill and Portlaoise are currently without power.

While Laois Fire & Rescue Services are very busy this morning trying to clear falling trees.

They say: “Our crews are attending a number of trees down in the Mountmellick and Portarlington areas.

“Great care is needed on the road as Storm Ali passes through.”

The National Ploughing Championships in Screggan in Offaly have also fallen victim to the bad weather.

LaoisToday understands that entry for the public has now been pushed back to 12.30pm.

A Garda on site confirmed to one of our reporters that the public would not be permitted entry until then due to safety concerns.

The National Ploughing Association said last night that opening would be delayed until 11am due to Storm Ali.
