Portlaoise hospital has appointed a new director of nursing.
Sandra McCarthy from Kildare is a registered general nurse and a registered general nurse tutor with extensive clinical, educational and managerial experience.
She trained in Meath Hospital in Dublin and transferred to Tallaght Hospital when it opened in 1998.
She has been a member of the senior nursing executive team and senior human resources management team in Tallaght hospital.
She boasts an honours degree in nursing from Trinity College Dublin, an MSc in nursing and a postgraduate qualification in healthcare education from UCD.
She is an experienced health-care provider with in-depth knowledge of operations management, administrative management and financial management.
She has 20 years’ experience of effectively delivering in the health arena, including direct and indirect patient care, graduate and postgraduate education.
She has held the positions of clinical placement co-coordinator, education co-ordinator and is currently head of learning and development in Tallaght hospital.
Hospital manager at Portlaoise Micheal Knowles said “We are delighted to welcome Sandra McCarthy. It is important that the hospital attracts and retains the highest quality clinical and nursing professionals and Sandra is a welcome addition to our management team.”
Sandra replied; “I am delighted to commence as director of nursing in Portlaoise hospital. I will continue to develop the professional nursing services in Portlaoise hospital and build on the excellent work which has occurred over the previous years. I look forward to working with and getting to know both the staff and the community in Portlaoise and the surrounding region.”
