Even after a hectic Electric Picnic last week, this weekend shows no signs of slowing down with lots of events around the county. This Sunday sees the return of the 66th annual Clonaslee Show which is always a great day out.

For something a bit different checkout Footsbarn Theatre Company in Ballintubbert House & Gardens and there is some great fundraiser events in Abbeyleix and Portarlington & Mountmellick that are well worth supporting.

Friday September 7

Garden Party in Aid of Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital

This event for a very worthy cause will be held in Heath Cottage, Ballacolla Road, Abbeyleix. A garden party is a lovely way to finish off the summer. So come along from 11am to 7pm and have some fun.

Portarlington Tea Dance

A great evening is guaranteed in Portarlington this Friday. Come along to the Tea Dance in aid of Multiple Sclerosis Society, Kolbe Special School, Friends of St Fiacc’s House. Tickets are €10 and can be bought at the door. Come along from 9.30pm to 12.30am in Portarlington Community Centre.

Footsbarn Theatre Company at Ballintubbert House & Gardens

Running as part of the “Come up to the House “nationwide series, Ballintubbert House near Stradbally hosts 2 nights this weekend of theatrics and musicalities. Friday begins with Footsbarn Theatre Company’s performance of Bottom’s Dream. They are renowned for their exciting adaptations of classics plays, frequently drawing on Shakespeare and Moliere to create original productions with a unique blend of visual theatre, music and magic.

If you were at Electric Picnic you may have got a taste of their show at the Hazelwood stage. Tickets are €25 and show begins at 7.30 and can be purchased at the door, on Eventbrite or email myhost@ballintubbert.com.

Dancing at Dixies

Get your dancing shoes on this Friday and join Dancing at Dixies at Napper Tandy’s, Stradbally. Live music and dancing from 8pm to late.

Saturday September 8

Glen Hansard and Hank Wangford at Ballintubbert House

The “Come On Up To The House” weekend continues at Ballintubbert House with Glen Hansard & Hank Wangford Ballintubbert Gardens Live music in the amazing setting of Ballintubbret Gardens. Tickets are €35.00 and the event begins at 6pm. See myhost@ballintubbert.com for ticket information.

Warre Natural Beekeeping course

Interested in bee keeping? Dunmore Country School are running a Warre hive beekeeping course which is a French beekeeping system, inspired from the traditional skep beekeeping. Course cost €90 and runs from 10am to 3pm. For more information contact 087 1258002.

Knock Vintage Run

This year’s Knock Vintage Run begins in Timahoe at 1pm. There will be a large number of Steam engines, vintage tractors, history tours of Timahoe tower, green lane run on the day. This will be followed up with food and entertainment in Headens of Spink later that evening followed by a cock and bull auction . For more information contact Niall Headen 087 8141682.

Portarlington Run to Remember

The annual Portarlington Run to Remember event for family’s and runners takes place this Saturday. Walk, run or crawl the marked 5km route! All proceeds go to the Laois/Offaly Palliative Care and PCC renovation project. Entry is €10 adults, €5 kids or €20 for a family. Registeration at Portarlington Community Centre at 10.30am. The Laois Ladies finals take centre stage on Saturday with a triple header in O’Moore Park beginning at 3pm.

Sunday September 9

Clonaslee Show

The 66th Clonaslee show takes place this Sunday at Clonaslee Community Centre. The show combines agriculture with a great family day out including music, dog show all Ireland Championships and a monster draw with over €2,500 worth of prizes. Entry is €10 and school kids free. Luggacurren 10km Run

The 27th Luggacurren 10km run takes place this Sunday. Runners commence at 1pm sharp with entry fees €15 and €10 juniors. Walkers begin at 12.30 sharp and entry fees are €10 and €5 juniors. Registration at Luggacurren Hall. Souvenir t-shirts for all finishers and refreshements will be severed after the race. For more information contact James on 087 7567020.

Avon Workers Reunion

To mark 20 years of the closure of the Avon factory in Portarlington past workers are organising a get together in the Railway Bar at 4pm. Come along and catch up with old colleagues and friends. Music by the Four J’s and refreshments served. Cover charge €5.

Slieve Bloom Walk

The next Slieve Bloom walk is at Glenafelly Kinnitty. It’s a grade B walk that’s 9km and will take approx 3-4 hrs. €5 per walk. Meet at 11am at Kinnitty Community Centre. For more information contact Gerry Hanlon 086 8210057 or see slievebloom.ie

Fun Walk in aid of Mountmellick Hospital

Another great local charity that deserves support. It’s a great excuse to getting out and about on a Sunday morning. Meeting at the main entrance to the hospital at 12 noon . Entrance fee is €10 per adult and children under 16 free . Light refreshments will be served afterwards.
