We’re all guilty of doing it.
Mobile phones have become an extension of most of our hands and rather than talk to people, we often bury our heads into our screens.
But now this Laois pub has come up with a novel way to revive the art of conversation by switching off the WiFi
Bennett’s in Mountrath announced the news on their Facebook page.
They said: “Right here we go as from next Wednesday night after last race we’re going back in time.
“We’re going to bring back the pub to how it used to be, where going to the pub was to meet and chat so no WiFi, no social media.
“Many a good chat, yarn or joke was told over the counter but these days it’s all phones so for one night a week no phones. Only to answer the wife or husband.”
Owner Mag Bennett Drennan spoke to LaoisToday about where she got the idea from.
She said: “I put up the post on Facebook yesterday and the reaction has been brilliant.
“I was actually in A&E in Tullamore Hospital recently and that is where I got the idea.
“I was in a waiting room with around 50 people and not one person spoke the entire time we were there.
“Myself included in that too. So I just thought, the art of conversation is dying and hopefully this idea will revive it.”
