They know how to throw a party in Abbeyleix.
And this was certainly evident from the brilliant Alf Harvey photos of the Abbeyleix Parish Fete in the Rectory grounds in 2009.
While the weather wasn’t hectic that summer – and the rain fell on that August Bank Holiday Monday – there was still a fine turnout to the event.
“The generous, good humoured crowd stayed on though, with some taking shalter by having tea in the basement,” read the report in the following week’s Leinster Express.
“The committee want to say a big thank you to the many who came to Abbeyleix as well as all those who travelled from other areas for their continued support.
“Canon Patrick Harvey acknowledged the considerable hard work that went on behind the scenes preparing for the day, setting up the garden, running the stalls, the side shows and games and in preparing and serving the teas in the basement.
“Canon Harvey also gave sincere thanks to the many sponsors who supported them generously year after year.”
As well as a top cash prize of €500, there was also an amount of other competitions throughout the day, including a penalty competition, speedy pegs and bowls.
