There are only three days to go before Rathdowney Easyriders take up another mammoth 220km cycle in Clonakilty, Cork.
This will be the 16th year that the Easyriders are raising funds for worthwhile charities – this year’s charity being the Irish Lung Fibrosis Association (ILFA).
An estimated 50 cyclists and road crews will set off from the square at 8.30am before setting off on their enormous 220km journey.
The Easyriders will stop in Cork city on Saturday before taking on the final stretch of the journey from Cork to Clonakilty.
Not the first or last fundraiser for the ILFA
One of the organisers of the cycle, Helen Maher, explained how they chose to fundraise for the ILFA this year.
“The ILFA has benefited two or three locals and their families here in Rathdowney. It’s hard to pick out what charity every year but they are all worthwhile ones,” said Helen.
The Irish Lung Fibrosis Association was set up in 2002 to support patients and families living with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF).
IPF is a progressive lung condition where fibrosis or scarring causes the alveoli (air sacs) in the lungs to thicken and harden. The fibrosis or scarring interfers with the normal transfer of oxygen from the alveoli to the blood stream and results in low oxygen levels in the blood and shortness of breath.
Easyriders Rathdowney have organised a number a fundraisers which are done both before and after the 220km cycle. These include a charity soccer match, bag packing and fun runs among others.
The Easyriders are encouraging the crowds to get out and support them as they leave Rathdowney to travel the 220km on Saturday, August 4.
