Three Laois men are about to take on the cycle of a lifetime as they compete in the 160km Skoda ‘Ring of Clare’ tomorrow, Saturday, July 28.
Portlaoise men Ger Smullen, Alan Brosnan and Derek Meade are all taking part and have undergone extensive training for the challenge.
Ger, Alan and Derek are all keen cyclists and got talknig to Pat Mooney in Ballybrittas motors about doing the Skoda cycle.
Alan completed a 100k race in Kilcullen and incredibly, returned to cycling after getting his hernia removed years ago – and joined Ger and Derek on their ‘Bike to Work’ schemes.
“We train together whenever we can. We started properly about six months ago and I bought my first proper bike five years ago,” said Ger.
Looking forward to day out
“We’ve all reached cycling 120km but have never broken 160km. We’re just looking forward to cycling, having a bit of craic, and watching the hurling,” he added.
Cyclists will begin in Ennis and will cruise along the Wild Atlantic Way, travel through the Loop Head peninsula and along the beautiful Shannon Estuary waters.
Towns and landmarks on the incredible 160km include Doonbeg, Kilkee, Donnaha and Killimer.
Ballybrittas motors kitted the three men out with the gear needed for the cycle around the West this weekend.
