Our guide to what’s on in Laois this weekend

If you’re still up for basking in some glorious sunshine, there are plenty of activities for all the family to partake in all around the county.

Here’s our guide to what’s on this weekend.

FRIDAY, JULY 6

Castletown opening night
Castletown community centre are holding an open night from Friday, July 6 to Sunday, July 8. Celebrations will take place after completing Phase 1 of their refurbishment project.

Camross Golf Classic
The annual parish golf classic will take place on Friday July 6 and Saturday July 7 to accommodate as many participants as possible.

Music summer camp Graiguecullen
It’s not too late for youngsters to join the Fusion Music summer camp in Graiguecullen Parish centre as it ends today. For 6-10 year olds.

SATURDAY, JULY 7

Camross Parish social
The July Parish social will be held in the Parish Centre with music by Galway native Tom Healy.

Laois camogie team in championship action
The Laois camogie team take on Carlow in Round 2 of the All Ireland intermediate hurling championship. It takes place in Mountmellick and throw in is at 5pm.

Laois minor footballers take on Meath
The Laois minor footballers face Meath in the Leinster semi-final in O’Moore Park at 12noon. The prize for the winners is a Leinster final place against either Wicklow or Kildare.

Double header in O’Moore Park
O’Moore Park hosts a double header of All Ireland football championship action – with Armagh taking on Roscommon at 3pm and Cork meeting Tyrone at 5pm.

Laois GAA league finals
There are a number of Laois hurling and football league finals down for decision. You can see the full GAA fixture list here

SUNDAY, JULY 8

Shanahoe Races
The Shanahoe Horse & Pony racing promises to be a great day for all the family. Children will be admitted free with adults. The day also features a dog show, side shows, food and bouncy castles.

ICA Annual Walk in Portlaoise
The annual walk to support the Cuisle centre takes place at 2pm. Current Laois Rose Grainne Hogan will be starting off the walk along the Block Road.

The route goes down the Dublin Road past the prisons, round by the Church, back up the Stradbally road and around to the Cuisle Centre. There will also be a bric-a-brac sale in aid of the Centre.

Slieve Bloom Walks
Clear Lake is the destination for the latest Slieve Bloom walk. Meeting at Cadamstown car park at 11am. This walk is a Grade B 11km walk.

Clonsalee monthly bingo
Monthly bingo in Clonaslee resumes at 3pm with doors opening at 2.15pm.

Laois footballers in All Ireland Qualifiers
The Laois footballers have given us a great summer of entertainment and they are in action again on Sunday when they take on Monaghan in Navan at 2pm. A win will send Laois into the Super 8s, the new All Ireland quarter-final group phase introduced by the GAA.
