Students from Portarlington recently raised over €2,000 for the Laois Alzheimers Branch following a sponsored walk.
Last September Laois Alzheimer’s had the mobile unit in the area and visited many places over the few days, meeting people and giving them information on dementia.
One of the places visited was the Further Education College in Portarlington and two branch members gave a talk about dementia to a group of students studying healthcare.
This inspired the students to get involved and do something to help with fundraising.
“This group have come forward to help the Alzheimer’s Society raise funds as they really liked the talk and wanted to give back and decided to do a sponsored walk,” explained branch PRO Jacintha Byrne.
Following the walk, the students handed over a cheque for the sum of €2,253.95 to the Laois Alzheimers Branch.
All monies raised from the event in Laois will be retained within the county for local services.
