A woman in her early 20s has been arrested and is being detained in Portlaoise Garda Station following an incident on Monday evening that saw her drive onto a footpath in the town and attempt to knock down three men.
This followed on from a fight on the Mountrath Road where three young males damaged a car belonging to another male leading to a fight.
“One male was bitten and received injuries to an ear,” said a Garda source.
The injured male is 22 while the three other men are aged between 19 and 30.
“Following this as these three males walked away from incident a female acquaintance of male injured drove onto footpath and attempted to knock these three males down.
“She has been arrested and detained for endangerment and is expected to appear in court over coming 24 hours. This matter is a live investigation and involves a tense situation.”
The Gardai are appealing to witnesses that observed the incident at the Mountrath Road and Abbeyleix Road in Portlaoise between 5.30 and 6pm yesterday evening to contact Portlaoise Garda Station on 057 8674100.
There was also an incident in the Fairgreen area of Portlaoise on Sunday night when men wielding baseball bats wrapped in barbed wire caused a serious disturbance.
Gardai were patrolling the town on Sunday evening in relation to that incident.
There was also reports of the Garda helicopter circling Portlaoise on Monday afternoon while there were reports of a car set on fire in another part of the town on Monday evening.
