The Festival of the Mountain has been saved after the communities rallied together to support the annual festival in Rosenallis when it became known that it could come to an end this year.
The 56 year old festival had low turnout at meetings to organise the event but when the organising committee called on the community for support, people answered.
A spokesperson for the Rosenallis Development Association/Festival of the Mountain committee confirmed to LaoisToday that meetings had been taking place to decided the fate of the festival.
The spokesperson said: “It really would be a shame if it didn’t go ahead.
“It is a brilliant occasion and is always so well attended.”
Ideas, ideas
A follow up meeting will take place on Wednesday, May 30 to move forward with plans for the festival.
Anyone with an idea for a stall, game or promotion of any kind should attend the meeting.
Last year’s festival was opened by the 2017 Laois Rose Maeve Dunne and Rock on Paddy entertained the crowds. Queen and King of the Mountain, Most Glamorous Granny and Bonny Baby were also crowned.
The first Festival of the Mountain took place on Sunday 26 August 1962 and was organised by the late PP Thomas Kennedy.
A date has not yet been confirmed for this year’s festival.
