This Friday, May 25, the country will be asked to vote on a referendum to repeal or retain the 8th Amendment which protects the right of the unborn and the equal life of the mother.
It’s a topic that has been hotly debated in recent weeks and months and while the polls currently suggest a considerable lead for the Yes side, they do suggest the gap is narrowing – and that the undecided voters will play a mjor part.
For some people, voting can require an effort – if they live away from home for example – but people can apply for their postal vote if their circumstances don’t allow them get to their usual polling station.
And that was the case for some residents in Oakdale Nursing Home in Portarlington – many of whom voted last Friday.
Pictured in Oakdale last Friday by local photographer Michael Scully were Lily O’Neill from Ballybrittas accompanied by her husband Joe, with Oakdale Nursing Staff and returning Officer Michael Gillespie.
Speaking after the voting Director of Nursing in Oakdale, Ms. Avril Finnerty said:
“There was great interest in voting among our residents with an 85% turnout of those on the register.
“Many more chose to go out to their local Polling Station next Friday and we will be happy to facilitate them.
“It’s great to see such enthusiasm among our residents to exercise their right to vote, something they dearly cherish.”
