Over 1,600 people took to Mountmellick GAA Grounds this morning for the annual Darkness into Light event for Pieta House.
This is the seventh year that the event has taken place in Mountmellick and organisers Sue Nelson and Lisa Fox explained how the event continues to attract large numbers of people year on year.
“A lot of people in Mountmellick have been affected by suicide and it means a lot to everyone to be here. It’s such a huge event throughout the world now,” they said.
Sue gave an impassioned speech to the crowd before they took off on the 5km course at 4.15am.
From darkness into light
“Those haunted by sadness, we are armed with the courage to listen, to talk, to care. We walk shoulder to shoulder from the darkness into the light,” said Sue.
Mountmellick was one out of two Laois towns holding the event, with Rathdowney also holding their own 5km walk.
