The death has occurred of James (Jim) Crean senior, owner of the well-known family pub in Vicarstown.
Jim, who was originally from Wexford, and his wife Eucharia (Carrie) bought the pub in Vicarstown in the early 1970s when they moved from Dublin with their young family.
The premises has had an established presence in the village under the Crean family since and as well as a busy pub, there was also a guesthouse, the adjacent Crean Engineering business and the popular Barrowline Cruisers.
The pub’s customer base comes from both sides of the Laois-Kildare border, something that has led to plenty of banter around the time of big games over the years.
The pub has also been a regular venue for parties and various events and in recent years has become one of the consistent stops on a number of ’12 Pubs’ bus circuit and Christmas party scene.
Jim also worked as a driving test examiner for many years with a lot of people of a certain generation having been awarded their driving licence by him.
The local Annanough GAA club paid tribute to Jim and the Crean family, who have been long-time supporters and sponsors.
Jim is pre-deceased by his wife Carrie as well as his son Martin, who died tragically in a car accident in 2000, and his daughter Catherine, who passed away after a long illness in 2015.
He is survived by his loving family Philip, Paddy, Jamie, Mary, Eucharia, John and Brian, brother Philip, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, daughters-in-law, sons-in-law, nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
His funeral mass is arriving to the Church of the Assumption Vicarstown today (Sunday) for Requiem Mass at 1:30pm. Burial afterwards in Moyanna Cemetery.
