Laois Open Door Theatre were due to present It was a Dark and Stormy Night in the Dunamaise Arts Centre last month – but like a lot of things it was postponed because of Storm Emma and the unprecedented levels of snow that that brought.
However, the local group have rescheduled their performance for two different venues over two nights.
Their first show will be in the Abbeyleix Manor Hotel this Thursday, April 19, while they will be back in the Dunamaise Arts Centre on Friday, April 27. Both shows will be at 8pm.
It was a Dark and Stormy Night is a mystery comedy (bordering on farce) by Tim Kelly, reputedly America’s most publicised playright.
This “shameless spoof” won the Robert J Pickering Award for playwriting excellence.
The “spooky” play is set in “Ye Olde Wayside Inn” home of the kooky Saltmarsh family and haunted by the ghost of a revolutionary war soldier.
A murderously “daffy” romp that plays like the Adams Family meeting Arsenic and Old Lace.
The story, a spoof loaded with laughs and thrills takes place in an “old dark house”.
Residing in “Ye Olde Way-side Inn” are three flakey cousins, their uncle Silas and a strange hired girl who wandered in.
Cousin Ebenezer is dangerous when it’s stormy. Foul weather forces a hardnosed detective, some students, an odd salesperson, some nurses, a state trooper and a key witness to a murder to take shelter.
But who is in the wheelchair and why is it wearing a veil? When the wind howls and the lights flicker, the killing begins.
This play is sure to delight all those who love their mystery with a twist and a lot of giggles.
