Stunned shoppers looked on in awe last week as Gardai seized a firearm at Portlaoise’s Lyster square during the afternoon.
According to the Laois Nationalist, a large number of Gardai swarmed a car parked in the area shortly after lunchtime last Wednesday.
The paper reports that shoppers were left stunned as all the occupants were removed from the car.
And according to witnesses, a firearm was seized from one of the occupants and a number of them were then arrested.
It is reported that around 10 Gardai surrounded the car and the firearm appeared to be a pistol.
Two of the men arrested are from Portlaoise while there was also a woman.
It is understood they were brought to Portlaoise Garda Station for questioning following the incident.
