Gardai say they are ‘following a definite line of inquiry’ as a young Laois man who was the victim of an assault at the weekend remains in hospital.
The victim, who is in his early 20s and from Graiguecullen, is a prominent Gaelic footballer who has represented his club and county at all levels.
He was attacked in Carlow as he attempted to get a taxi in the early hours of Monday morning.
A Garda spokesperson told LaoisToday: “No arrests have been made to date, Gardaí are however following a definite line of enquiry.
“Gardaí in Carlow attended the scene of an incident at the Potato Market, Carlow.
“A male in his early 20s sustained serious head injuries during an altercation involving a number of people shortly after 1am.
“The injured man was removed to St. Luke’s General Hospital, Kilkenny where his condition is understood to be serious.
“Gardaí in Carlow are appealing for witnesses to contact them on 059-9136620 or the Garda Confidential Line 1800 666 111.
“Enquiries are ongoing.”
LaoisToday understands that he was hit and fell where he struck his head off the ground.
He is believed to have suffered multiple fractures to his skull and was rushed to St Luke’s Hospital in Kilkenny where he is still being treated.
His condition is reported as serious but stable and he is being monitored.
Gardai are said to be examining CCTV footage in a bid to determine the culprit.
