Gardai have launched an investigation after a young Laois man was viciously assaulted in Carlow last night.
The victim, who is believed to be in his early 20s and from Graiguecullen, is extremely well known in GAA circles.
He was attacked as he attempted to get a taxi after a night out.
LaoisToday understands that he was hit and fell where he struck his head off the ground.
He is believed to have suffered multiple fractures to his skull and was rushed to St Luke’s Hospital in Kilkenny where he is still being treated.
His condition is reported as serious but stable and he is being monitored.
Gardai are said to be examining CCTV footage in a bid to determine the culprit.
A Garda spokesman said: “Gardaí in Carlow attended the scene of an incident at the Potato Market, Carlow.
“A male in his early 20s sustained serious head injuries during an altercation involving a number of people shortly after 1am.
“The injured man was removed to St. Luke’s General Hospital, Kilkenny where his condition is understood to be serious.
“Gardaí in Carlow are appealing for witnesses to contact them on 059-9136620 or the Garda Confidential Line 1800 666 111.
