St Patrick’s graveyard near Abbeyleix should be included for improvement works, the recent Portlaoise Municipal District meeting heard.
In a motion, Cllr Mary Sweeney said the graveyard should be included in works including “paths and disability access in the coming year”.
In reply, council engineer Orla Barrett said Laois County Council is currently preparing a comprehensive report on all its cemeteries.
“An important part of this report will be a schedule of required works at each cemetery to not only ensure health and safety but also the timely development of each cemetery to meet the needs of the local community,” she said.
“On completion of the report it will be possible for Laois County Council to prioritise works on an informed basis as funds become available,” Ms Barrett said.
She said it is anticipated that the report will be completed in May/June of this year.
Access
“We have to have a look at it,” Cllr Sweeney said. “A lot of people have access difficulties,” he said.
She said the way St Peter & Paul’s graveyard is kept in Portlaoise is a credit to everyone there.
Cllr John Joe Fennelly agreed that problems at the graveyard would have to be looked at.
