This year the law was changed to allow alcohol sales on Good Friday, but this Laois pub is sticking to tradition and keeping closed on Friday March 30.
Moloney’s Gaelic Bar on Patrick Street, Mountmellick, will not be opening this Good Friday.
John Edward Moloney is the fourth generation proprietor of the popular family-owned pub and he announced the decision on his Facebook page this Monday.
“We will be closed on Good Friday even though new legislation was passed by our government earlier this year to allow the sale of alcohol on Good Friday.
“It’s the Publicans choice now to open and we have chosen not to open,” said John Edward.
Praise for their decision
Customers praised the publican’s decision.
