The cost of renting in Laois has continued to rise meteorically.
It rose by 9 per cent in the last year which not only outstrips the rest of the Midlands region, but also the entire country.
According to the Residential Tenancies Board, the price of rent in the county rose to over €740 in the 12 months up until the end of 2017.
This is staggering in comparison to Westmeath where it went up over 6% with those moving into the rental property market now paying an average of €700, while Offaly saw a rise of over 5 per cent to €674.
Nationally in the same time, the cost of renting a home grew by over 6%, with the average at over €1,000.
Rosalind Carroll is Director of the RTB, says that although rents are continuing to rise, the rate of growth has slowed.
Speaking to Midlands 103, she said: “It is a slow down on the previous growth figures that we would have seen.
“But we still see affordability issues in the market.
“So we do want to see a dampening of that growth level.”
