The things people will do when they get bored.
This snow is getting the better of us all and with cabin fever at an all-time high around the county, a couple of Laois GAA supporters living in the Parkside appartments beside O’Moore Park took it on themselves to write a message in the snow of the county GAA grounds.
Patrick Ryan from Portlaoise and his cousin Sonya Ryan wrote an absolutely massive ‘Laois 4 Sam’ into the snow on the pitch – and were directed by Patrick’s girlfriend Agnes Vilande from the fifth floor of the nearby building.
Laois have never won the Sam Maguire trophy but ‘Mayo 4 Sam’ has become the slogan of choice for Mayo people and it has cropped up at a variety of locations all over the world.
We’ve never seen too many ‘Laois 4 Sam’ signs and we’ve certainly never seen one like this.
“It took three hours to do and we were going as fast as we could,” said Patrick who said they did it by hand using only a small kichen brush and pan.
“Agnes was directing it all from the fifth floor. We’re very dedicated Laois supporters and we just hope the hurlers don’t get disappointed that we didn’t do ‘Laois 4 Liam!
“The whole thing nearly killed us – but it was some craic!”
Patrick is a well-known local photographer and also played hurlinb and football for Portlaoise. We don’t think he ever made as big an impact around the middle of the field as this, however!
Sonya is from Colt and her family have a long association with the Colt GAA club.
The duo finished by doing snow angels beneath their sign before retreating back into the warmth.
Fair play though – you’ve done your county some service!
