Love was in the air at Portlaoise Educate Together National School on Valentine’s Day last Wednesday February 14… the love of good food and cakes.
The school’s annual cake sale took place and this year the creativity was turned up a dial.
Local cookie artist Ilona Goncarenko created Pokemon, emojis, the cookie monster and beautiful hand crafted cookies.
Parents outdid themselves with trays of cup cakes, cookies, fruit cakes and mountains of chocolate.
The junior classes were cautious buyers, making very selective choices with their spending money, by the time the senior classes arrived the big spenders came out to play.
With children not only buying for themselves but buying their parents a loving treat for the day that was in it! One fifth class student bought an entire cake to share with his family that evening.
Nora Alastal is a member of the student council and sixth class student. She said, “The cake sale is one of my favourite events in the school over the entire year.”
Money raised
The Parents Association run the cake sale event every February and this year they reached a record breaking amount of €1205.
Siobhan Mannion, chairperson of the PA said she was, “Absolutely chuffed with how the day went, the student council and the parents who volunteered on the day were amazing – we couldn’t run this event without their support.”
The money will go to the school for the much needed Nessy Programme, which is a literacy programme for children with Dyslexia and the Numicon multi-sensory maths programme.
