Laois County Council have been called to seek funding from the Department of the Environment to combat ‘disgraceful’ dumping in Laois bogs.
Cllr John King says that there is a serious problem of rubbish being dumped in Lismurragh, Deegan and Ballagh bogs in Errill.
He said: “On Monday last, Orla Barrett (senior engineer) came out and met with local people and a man from Coillte where we visited the bogs.
“Orla did state that Laois County Council would be making an application for funding to combat this.
“This morning, Minister Naughtan announced that €2million was been made available to deal with this serious issue across Ireland.
“So I want Laois County Council to put in a serious application for funding. I think we got €45k or €50k last year but I’d like to see that greatly increased.
“Dumping in our bogs, ditches, towns and villages is disgraceful and has to be addressed.”
Orla Barrett said: “These bogs have been the subject of large scale illegal dumping.
“In conjunction with the community and Coillte, Laois County Council will make an application for funding.
“This would include clean up, CCTV, signange, enforcement action, gates and an educational programme to be run in school.”
