The prison officer community in Portlaoise and beyond is in mourning this week at the deaths of two former members.
In recent days, Stradbally men John Dwyer and Noel Buggy both died.
The local prison officers’ retirement group said it was shocked to hear of the death of John Dwyer.
The late Mr Dwyer was well-known in the local community.
Stradbally Community Games offered its deepest sympathies to their lifelong valued volunteer Mary Dwyer on the loss of her husband John.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with Mary and their children especially only two weeks after the loss of her mother. John Dwyer RIP,” the club posted on social media.
Mary’s mother, Bridget (Beesie) Connor (née Bryan) of Monevane, Walsh Island, in county Offaly passed away in recent weeks.
She was mother of some of Offaly’s famous footballers – Matt, Richie and Murt Connor.
Tributes were paid to the late Mr Buggy, by Stradbally Town FC, a club he gave much dedicated service to.
“The club said it was saddened to Learn of the passing of Noel “Lowry” Buggy. Noel is uncle of our current chairman James Buggy and committee member Stephen. He was an excellent goalkeeper on many a Stradbally soccer team throughout the Late 70’s, 80’s and early 90’s and will be fondly remembered by those who played both with him and against him.
“The club extended its deepest sympathy to his wife Marie, daughters Lisa and Tara, mother Lil, sister Margaret, brothers Martin, Charlie and Dan, nieces, nephews, grandchildren, extended family, friends and former team-mates,” the club said.
Tributes were also paid by Stradbally GAA Club whom the late Mr Buggy also played for.
Removal took place to the Sacred Heart Church, Stradbally on Tuesday morning for 10am Funeral Mass with interment afterwards in Oakvale Cemetery.
