The proposed Portlaoise Southern Relief Road – which will connect the Timahoe Road with the Abbeyleix Road – has been given a major boost with news that €3.5million has been secured to commence construction.
Laois TD and Minister for Justice & Equality, Charlie Flanagan has announced the news.
“I am happy to announce that funding in the sum of €3.5 million has been allocated to Laois County Council under the 2018 Strategic Regional & Road Allocation,” said Minister Flanagan.
“These funds will allow Laois County Council to proceed with the construction of this much needed road for Portlaoise town. “
“This is one of the biggest investments in Portlaoise town in recent times. The road will link the Abbeyleix to Timahoe Road and will provide direct access to the Summerhill School Campus hence bypassing Portlaoise town.
“The Portlaoise Southern Relief Road, which is one of the most important infrastructural projects in the town in recent years, will improve travel times, make the roads safer and make Laois more attractive to businesses. “
Concluding Minister Flanagan stated: “I’m delighted that funding has been secured and will continue to work with Laois County Council and the Department of Transport to ensure that the project is priorities and construction commences shortly.”
