The Catholes in Ballyfin and the Cahir road in Borris-in-Ossory were among some of the topics discussed at the recent Borris-in-Ossory/Mountmellick municipal district meeting.

Tourist attraction is ‘unsightly’ and ‘a disgrace’

The unused reservoir at the Catholes, Ballyfin, has been described as ‘unsightly’ and a ‘disgrace’ by local councillor David Goodwin.

Cllr Goodwin made the comments at the recent Borris-in-Ossory/Mountmellick municipal district meeting after his motion to repair the road and clean up the unused reservoir.

Senior Engineer Michael O’Hora said that the site is not under control by Laois County Council but by Irish Water. He added that the county council will seek proposals from Irish Water for Envionmental and safety enhancements for the area.

Cllr Goodwin said that Laois County Council should, “have some responsibilty to leave it half respectable.”

Laois road is ‘gone past repair’

The Cahir road in Borris-in-Ossory is gone past repair, according to one local councillor.

Cllr Brendan Phelan said, “The road has been repaired and repaired and repaired and repaired and repaired – it’s almost gone past repair! It needs complete resurfacing.”

Cllr Phelan made the remarks at the recent Borris-in-Ossory/Mountmellick municipal district meeting.

“Like a lot of roads, a lot of time and effort is gone into repair when they need to be completely resurfaced,” he added.
