Sinn Féin TD, Brian Stanley, has welcomed today’s announcement by Minister for Health Simon Harris.
The Minister announced that there will be consultation with local clinicians and the community on the future of Portlaoise Hospital in the New Year.
Deputy Stanley said: “Crucially this never happened when Dr. Susan O’Reilly was preparing her report.
“However this consultation must be carried out expeditiously and not dragged out any further.
“Portlaoise has suffered from years of uncertainty and 2018 cannot be another year of fudge.
“2018 needs to be the year of positive decisions on Portlaoise Hospital that sees the Emergency Department and other key services secured.
“I also welcome the cancellation of the launch of Dr. O’ Reilly’s plan. If acted on it would have superceded any other plan for the hospital.”
